Although we always describe them as half-angels, those singing birds that are the purest and most innocent, we first had to agree on a number of things in order to find ourselves a place in their vast kingdom.
Those things we try to sum up for the purpose of making ourselves familiar with a number of fundamental definitions as well as a historical overview on Intellectual Disability (ID).

This, in turn, would help us set a finger on the range of a person's intellectual and perceptive strength as it has been proven that an early diagnosis of ID is of a great value both for the child, who is then treated in a different manner, and the family, who didn't know that their child has ID. Hence, alternate educational techniques are applied, which differ from those applicable on normal children of the same chronological age.
Only then it is possible to deal with the problems a disabled child faces especially those related to comprehension and conversation.
This will eventually make it easier for us to enter his/her new world, establish channels of communications, and fulfill the goal of making him/her a functional part of the surrounding society.
This is why it was important to pinpoint the general characteristics of the intellectually disabled, the scientific methods most suitable to deal with them and the role played by the afflicted family. The purpose for such endeavors is to help them make it through this demanding, wild world as well as help their families contain the problem of ID, thus giving them the chance of recognition and self-expression, allowing them to hail their success and give an indulgent smile while listening to their enthusiastic uproar, "Yes, we are here! We exist!"
